The exact moment that started off the chain of events is clear now. If I hadn’t been impressed by the quality of grass Patti was smoking, I would never have introduced her to my brother Joe, she would never have got the band stoned before the gig, and the ‘Dogs Bollocks’ would never have been formed.

I missed out on the Punk ‘revolution’ because I was touring Germany in the first ever Beatles tribute band ‘Abbey Road’, as support to an Elvis Presley impersonator. When I return, my long hair, George Harrison moustache, flairs and afghan are about as obsolete as the twin guitar solo. London had moved on, and so had my friends. The ‘Dogs Bollocks’ were now hailed as the kings of punk, and even my landlord Willy had taken advantage of the ‘Wave.’ Gone was the afro, white flared suit and Cuban heels, and London’s hottest disco band were now called Urban Jungle and pumping out heavy roots reggae. Willy sings about being in Babylon, Terry the local hard lad says it will all end in tears, and for some it does.

Terry ends in prison, Willy in a wheel chair, Patti on a world tour, and me and Joe back to square one in North Wales.

As fiction ebooks go,it is up there with the best. It is very short and could fill an afternoon while the kids are on their play stations and your hubby on the golf course, and will take you back to when you had that pink hair and bondage gear This is a must for anybody who liked the Commitments or Still Crazy. It has the English understated Irony dripping from every page. Have fun reading.

My first book is September Blue by writer John Tallon Jones. The story is a ‘tongue in cheek’ look at 70’s youth culture, and follows the lives of two young brothers who have made the journey to London to find fame and fortune. It’s a funny tale set against a background of life at a time without mobile phones, computers and multi channel TV. This era is particularly interesting as it marks the end of the old ‘Supergroups (E.L.O Genesis etc) and marks the beginning of Punk and New Wave. The novelist builds a plot with a series of zany but believable characters and the whole story fits together well , but ends rather abruptly. The reason for this, is that the book is part of a trilogy which maps out the lives of the brothers from young punk rebels to middle aged……well I will have to read the next two books to tell you this. Check this EBook out as it is exceptionally funny and well written.

My next selection is a crime thriller by Saffina Desforges. The characters in the book are apparently based on real life studies. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare: A child fails to return home. As hours turn to days, all they can do is hope. Some children never come back. Sugar & Spice is a ground-breaking new crime-thriller set against the background of Britain’s unjust criminal justice system, with the key protagonists the mother and partner of a murdered child. The book is well written but not for the squeamish. If you like books with no hold barred realism, then this is a definite for you.

My last book ‘Science points to God’ by George Coleman Conrad is described by the author as a ‘factual path to ultimate reality’ The book was written to enable busy people to explore most-complicated scientific discoveries in a simple way. It is very different from September Blue and Sugar and Spice as it delivers a very complex topic about God and the Universe in a very simple and easy to read way. It discusses the two possible choices of why we exist, which can be explained either scientifically by accident or the ‘God’ theory which fundamentally believed that there was some deeper master plan. The book is both enlightening and well written and is my last suggestion.

I have just finished reading September Blue, which is a new release in EBOOK format by writer John Tallon Jones.It’s a quite short read but is addictively juicy in content. This is the first book by Tallon Jones, and in it he takes up back to the 70’s for a nostalgic look at youth culture of the time. This is a time a change when old style hippie ideals are pushed aside as punk and New wave take control. If you were around at the time I recommend you check this book out as it is full of absolute time gems of nostalgia. For those who were not yet born, it will be a history lesson in what your parents really got up to before they become boring and conventional. This is comical fiction at it’s very best.

To sum up the story briefly. Dai Davies who is the protagonist, has followed his brother from boring suburbia to London in an attempt to become famous. The fact that he has no talent, no friends (except his brother) no money, and nowhere to live hasn’t deterred him but as he settles into London ‘squat’ life he realises that the City is full of hopefuls like himself and mostly better models. This is the time of the Supergroup, long hair, flairs and the afghan but change is on the way and Dai and his brother get caught up in different ways. Dai who can barely play his instrument is talked into touring Germany with one of the original Beatles tribute bands as a support act to a ‘megalomaniac’ Elvis Presley impersonator, whilst Joe his brilliantly gifted guitarist brother ends up in the Notorious London Punk band the ‘Dogs Bollocks’.

The book drifts in and out of the lives of the two brothers and the plot is brought to hilarious life by a host of strange characters and events that could only have taken place against the backdrop of a time when your TV only had BBC and ITV and your ‘stereo record player’ was the personification of state of the art technology.

The story ends a bit too suddenly for me, with the Boys lost on a mountain in North Wales, having gone up to the summit in an attempt to find ‘a new direction’. It leaves the reader eager to find out what will happen next, but for this you are going to have to wait, as this is the first of a trilogy of publications tracking the brother’s ascent into boring middle age? Or rock stardom? You are going to have to read the book to see which road it will be.
